For our September 9 Monthly Program, Shirnetta Harrell, Executive Director of No Woman No Girl will join us. The mission of The No Woman, No Girl Initiative is to share hope, essentials and education with women and girls specifically in Wake County, NC by: a) Ensuring that women and girls experiencing crisis or transition gain access to everyday essentials for 90 days. b) Removing barriers to low self-esteem, poor feminine hygiene and overall sustainability through educational materials. c) Collaborating with agency partners that serve women and girls to ensure a continuum of care and strengthen overall means of support. d) Increasing community consciousness by participating in opportunities to further educate others about the lack of access and affordability to everyday essentials for women and girls. e) Facilitating educational programming with agency partners to increase awareness around feminine hygiene and hope.
Shirnetta will speak about her own family and professional background leading up to the formation of No Woman No Girl, as well as the plans for the nonprofit going forward. A native of Nashville, NC and a 2x HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) graduate, she has a master of Social Work degree with a concentration in Community Mental Health. Her nonprofit experience is rooted in her graduate assistantship where she interned at Harris Home for Children which is a nonprofit organization that provides full time foster care services and crisis support for neglected adolescents in Alabama. She later went on to widen her social work experience by working in residential treatment facilities, group homes, community mental health and school social work.
The No Woman, No Girl Initiative was birthed out of the need to target minority women and girls who disproportionately fall marginalized to a lack of accessibility and affordability in what they need to survive. They will be announcing their Agency Partners in July.
